Newsflash for NewsFlash!
|National Flash Fiction Day takes place Saturday 27th June 2015. For the past two years we’ve hosted Dublin’s flash fiction event, and we’re delighted to be back again this year, proudly presenting Newsflash!
We want flash that is powerful and intimate, brief and highly charged. We are inviting submissions from anyone who might like to read on the day – we’ll select the finest under-500-word stories for our NEWSFLASH event. Our deadline for submissions is 1st June and 2 stories max can be sent (in separate emails please!) to flash@bigsmokewritingfactory.com!
We’re also excited to announce our annual Flash Fiction Competition “The 101″. We’ve added a new challenge this year by giving you two extra words to play around with. All you flash-enthusiasts will know the power of two more words. We like to think it is a word-perfect flash challenge.
Every story entered must be EXACTLY 101 words. No more. No less.
With only 101 words on the page there are very few places to hide so send us your best. It can be shocking or touching, brutal or heart wrenching – we want flash that moves the reader. Whether you’re a flash fiction newbie or a total flash expert, this is an evening of creativity and inspiration not to be missed!
The deadline for 101 submissions is 8th June and 2 stories max can be sent (in separate emails please!) to flash@bigsmokewritingfactory.com.
As always this event is FREE and will be held in Arthur’s Pub, Dublin 8. All are welcome. So come along and bring a friend, bring two if you’ve got them! We look forward to seeing you all there!

Can people from outside of Dublin and/or outside of Ireland submit stories? Does one have to be able to come to the event in order to submit their stories? And will the chosen stories be published in print or online anywhere, for others to read?
Thanks very much in advance for your response.
Hi Clara,
Everyone is welcome to submit their stories. The 500 words one is submitted for the chance to read at the event so it might suit you better to enter The 101 competition. The five winning stories will be printed on postcards on the day and handed out at the event. An overall winner will then be chosen.
Warm regards,
The Big Smoke Team
Hi,
Is the title included in the 101 words?
Have previous winning stories been published anywhere?
Thanks
Ruth
Hi Ruth,
Titles don’t affect the wordcount (unless they are very long and are being used to support the story, ie the story doesn’t make sense without the long title…) but excepting this, there is no problem having them. The five winning stories will be printed on postcards on the day and handed out at the event. They are not published anywhere else.
Warm regards,
The Big Smoke Team
