‘Popular’ forms and genres are often looked down on in writing circles, but they’re a vital part of what we read and what is sold in bookshops. In this eight-week class, suitable for both writers and readers, we’ll look at different genres – their history, their identifying characteristics, their particular requirements, and what we can learn from each one.
Each week will include material to read at home, a group exercise in class, and a short individual creative writing assignment.
Topics will include:
- Introduction to ‘the popular’
- Science Fiction
- Crime Fiction
