‘Popular’ forms and genres are often looked down on in writing circles, but they’re a vital part of what we read and what is sold in bookshops. In this 4-week class, suitable for both writers and readers, we’ll look at different genres & what’s particular about each of them.
Each week will include: class discussions, a group exercise, and a short individual creative writing assignment. Expect plenty of book recommendations as well!
- Week 1: Introduction: What Even Is ‘Popular’ Fiction?
- Week 2: Other Worlds: Fantasy, Science Fiction, Horror
- Week 3: It’s A Mystery: Crime Fiction from Detectives to Domestic Suspense
- Week 4: Dangerous Reading Material: Romance, Young Adult Fiction, and Comic Books
