This course is designed for anyone interested in starting to write fiction, or for anyone who writes stories but would like to develop and improve their skills. The course will explore character, plot, voice/viewpoint, setting and description, and dialogue. We will also look at the varieties of short story forms, the novella, and the novel. In later weeks there will be the opportunity for participants to share their work with the group and receive constructive criticism.
Facilitator: Nicole Rourke
The advice and guidance on developing the plot, getting to know your characters more intimately was helpful. The course also made me realise that I need to just make time to write, rather than waiting for the ‘ideal conditions’….Writing is a very solitary thing, and the course felt like a community of writers who are all struggling to do the same thing. It gave me the encouragement (and tips and advice) I need to keep going.
I found it really encouraging and useful – it gave me some ideas about how to structure my approach to writing, which was what I was most lacking. I think anybody interested in writing would benefit from this course.
[Claire] made it a delight to be part of the class. Her support, hard work and skills were excellent… I have learned a lot from this course and done so in a very entertaining and engaging way. I could not recommend Claire highly enough.
