‘Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.’ – Arthur C. Clarke
Every great fantasy story has one thing in common – they made us believe that magic could happen. Just as characters must be believable and your plot must be plausible, the world you create must be a real world, complete in its rules and filled with the spark of imagination that separates classic from cliché.
This seminar will give you the tools to craft your own universe. We’ll look at how genre greats like Terry Pratchett, Philip Pullman and J.K. Rowling use world-building not as a simple background for their stories, but as a window into their characters’ souls. We’ll create monsters and magic systems, discuss how to avoid stock tropes and workshop your own worlds so that they’ll become as robust and believable as Hyboria, Hogwarts or Middle-Earth.
